Ca’ della Tognella
ancient rural mill
Imagine walking through the doors of B&B Cà Tognella and being transported back in time to 1796, when these very walls housed a storage of flour and milled grains from a small mill located 300 meters away on the Progno di Fumane. This place, once essential to the rural economy of the area, collected the fruits of local farmers' labor and nourished the families of the region. Over the centuries, Cà Tognella transformed into a welcoming refuge for travelers and businessmen passing through the region with horse-drawn vehicles. Its strategic location between Verona, Lake Garda, and Valpolicella made this establishment an ideal stopover. In the rooms where travelers once rested, now completely renovated, we aimed to preserve the atmosphere of intimacy and hospitality of the past. The structure, with its exposed beam ceilings, recalls the original rustic aesthetic, but with all modern comforts. Every detail has been enhanced through the restoration and use of noble materials, designed to make guests feel as if they are part of a centuries-old story. We wanted to maintain these features as a tribute to the simple and genuine life of the past, creating a tangible connection between the past and the present.
The name "Pescantina" is believed to derive from the Latin "Piscantina" or "Piscantinum." This term is linked to the word "piscis," which means "fish." The derivation may refer to the practice of fishing, which was likely a common activity along the Adige River that runs through the territory of Pescantina. The town of Pescantina experienced the world conflicts of the last century firsthand and served as a landing place for those who, after internment in Nazi camps, managed to return to their homeland. Noteworthy in this regard are the War Memorials in Piazza San Rocco and the Monument to Former Internees at the former railway station of Balconi. Today, Pescantina is a vibrant center that combines tradition and modernity while maintaining its agricultural vocation, with a particular focus on the cultivation of vines and peaches. The area has seen significant development in the tourism sector, thanks to its strategic location near Verona, Lake Garda, and Valpolicella. Pescantina represents a perfect balance between past and present, with a keen focus on preserving its historical and cultural heritage while continuing to look toward the future with innovation and dynamism.
